Invisalign: The Clear Alternative to Braces

clear braces Houston TXHaving straight teeth is more important than just a great smile. Crooked teeth create areas in the mouth where plaque builds leading to the potential for decay or gum disease. Teens and adults may be hesitant to wear bulky metal braces, but Invisalign clear braces have eliminated concern for those patients that require teeth straightening. A consultation with your Invisalign dentist will begin a journey to straight teeth and improved dental health. The many benefits of Invisalign include:

Aligners are clear – Invisalign uses a transparent material so this teeth straightening method is virtually undetectable.

Aligners are comfortable – There’s no metal wires or brackets to abrade soft oral tissues.

Aligners are removable – This allows the patient to eat all their favorite foods. The patient simply removes “braces” for snacks and meals and replaces when done. Daily brushing and flossing can be completed easily without having to maneuver around metal braces that are cemented in place for extended periods.

Your dentist will get your Invisalign program underway by submitting the tools needed by the Invisalign lab to fabricate the series of aligners. The aligners are designed to be replaced every two weeks by the patient. Each new aligner should feel snug; over the next two weeks teeth are being shifted. This process is repeated until your malocclusion has been corrected.

Patients are required to wear their aligners a minimum of twenty to twenty-two hours every day in order to achieve results in the designated time allocated.

Once the teeth straightening segment of treatment is over, the patient will be given a retainer to be worn as prescribed. This is a critical part of treatment; if not followed, teeth could drift back to their earlier location.

A retainer looks much like the aligners worn throughout treatment. By wearing the retainer, the patient is allowing teeth to develop a memory of their new location. The bones that hold teeth in place have been shifted; now they need time to solidify their new placement.

It is important to note that periodic visits with the dentist to check on Invisalign progress are not intended to take the place of regular six month cleaning appointments. Patients should be brushing twice daily, flossing every day, and visiting the dentist for cleaning and dental exam every six months for teeth to remain healthy throughout the teeth straightening process.
